Smith Street Shophouses
Reconditioning
The shophouses of Chinatown, Singapore, are a vibrant testament to the rich cultural heritage and architectural diversity of the area. These charming, multi-story buildings date back to the early 19th century and showcase a harmonious blend of Chinese, Malay, and European architectural influences. Characterized by their intricate facades and colourful tiles, each shophouse tells a story of the bustling commerce and community life that has defined Chinatown for generations.
Once serving as both homes and shops, these shophouses now house a mix of traditional businesses, trendy boutiques, eateries, and art galleries, making the streets a lively destination for both locals and tourists. The narrow alleyways and bustling sidewalks create a vibrant atmosphere, inviting visitors to explore hidden gems and experience the flavours and traditions of the area.
Preserved with care, these shophouses are not only a visual delight but also a vital part of Singapore's cultural landscape. They stand as a reminder of the city’s history, embodying the spirit of resilience and adaptation that has shaped Chinatown into a dynamic hub of commerce and culture today. SilverSeal D&C conducted extensive works to restore and preserve nine of the shophouses in preparation for the new phase in the Chinatown facelift.
